Hello Gorgeous.....

Let’s talk jewelry.  I’m sure you want to know how I started my line.  Well, if not, I’m going to tell you anyway so just keep reading.  One day I saw some bead bracelets that I wanted to buy, but the cost of these bracelets were very prohibitive.  One of my good friends, who also makes jewelry, encouraged me to make them on my own. My goal was to have HER make them for me.  But she pushed me to give it a go myself.  She gave me a quick lesson and then I started doing some research on my own.  I started watching YouTube videos and I even took a few classes.  Eventually, I started designing my own and I thought they turned out pretty good.  I was perfectly pleased with myself and I had zero intentions of selling my designs to other people.  However, one day I was wearing a couple of them and my friend asked me where I had purchased them.  I told her I made them and then she asked me to make her some as well.  Then another friend asked me to design some for her.  And then another and another.  So it wasn’t long before BSGO Jewelry came to be.

What’s with the Name?

BSGO stands for Big Sister Gorgeous One.  The name stems from the late 80’s sitcom A Different World, which is by far, my favorite sitcom of all time.  This show is the reason I decided to go to college out of state.  This show unlike any of its kind, was about the college experience and the challenges young people face as they prepare to enter a world that was vastly different than their parent’s.  And the best part was that it was a show about African-American college students, people who looked like me.  Every Thursday night, I got to turn on the TV and see brown people in college learning, partying, growing, and then succeeding.  It was probably the most influential TV show to my life to date.  It actually helped shape the person I decided I wanted to become.  The actual name came from the main character, Whitley Gilbert.  It was her Big Sister name in her sorority on the show.  I remember Whitley’s vanity on the first few seasons where she kept her bits, baubles and perfumes.  The inspiration for my jewelry stems from wanting to have pieces in my own collection that look like they belong on THAT vanity.

So the name Big Sister Gorgeous One is an ode to Whitley Gilbert and a love letter to the women in the world who like pretty things.  I also wanted to make sure that my pieces were affordable, because unlike the character of Whitley Gilbert, we are all not rich.  Some of us are on a budget.  And I have never been one to believe that you have to spend a ton of money to look and feel gorgeous.  Each piece is carefully handmade and designed by me.  So hey gorgeous……take a tour with me to discover these pieces I made for the Fall/Winter season.
